After a pause of six weeks on my house sitting, I’m finally back into it. This property is located in suburban Te Awamutu. I normally go for the more rural properties but my car is overdue for a good birthday and needing a thorough service, wheel alignment, and some other bits and pieces. So when I was offered this assignment I grabbed it because the location of this place is perfect as it puts me within walking distance of the workshops. I also have a storage locker on the other side of town which needs a good tidy-up, so again this property is nice and handy for doing that. And the Fresh Choice shop is only about a five-minute walk just up the road. Plus, this house sit is a nice long one (32 days) and it has three kitty cats, and I love cats.
This is a new property and my first time staying here. I arrived last Monday and I’m here until Boxing Day. The home owners have popped over to Aussie to visit family. This is an older house and was probably built in the 1920s but it’s had a lot of renovations over the years and is really nice and comfy, and it gets plenty of sunshine.
Pet-wise I have 3 cats here, as mentioned above, and they’re all very quiet and friendly. There’s Pipi, a 19(!) year old who has arthritis and who is definitely showing her age. She’s on the thin side and her coat is quite ‘matted’ which makes it look as if she’s been hiking through the bush in the pouring rain, though in reality it’s just down to her age. She does get oral medication when she needs it for her arthritis, but she’s actually surprisingly mobile, and she has a healthy appetite which is very pleasing to see. In general she seems a happy and chirpy cat with plenty of purring, and she’s quite talkative as well.
Next is Tui, a very smoochy Tortoiseshell who’s never far away. Thirdly, there is Bronson who’s not actually supposed to be living here. His home is somewhere on the next street, but he likes this place better and has been camping with the homeowners for a while now.
The street is a semi-main street but is surprisingly rather quiet in relation to its location. There’re cars going past for much of the day, but not much in the way of heavy vehicles, and I think all the neighbours must either have cats or no pets at all, because I don’t think I’ve heard any dogs so far. All in all, this should be a very good house sit.

December 3 2024 at 9:39 PMIt’s interesting to hear about Bronson ‘adopting’ this house. Cats do have a way of deciding for themselves, don’t they? I’ve had similar experiences with neighbor cats becoming part of my sitting routine.
